Here's additional technical information regarding the Moss Landing incident from the trade publication Energy Storage News. https://www.energy-storage.news/fire-at-moss-landing-energy-storage-facility-what-we-know-so-far/ (To view this article, a no-cost email registration is required.) My conclusion is there are risks and problems associated with being the first of a kind large energy storage installation.

I believe we’ll see more of these conflagrations. Perhaps, especially, in New England, where Mass has enacted a statute to bring online something like 4-5GW(I don’t require the required time ratings) in the next few years.

What shall be most interesting is that to the best of my knowledge, there’s not really any VRE of note to charge the batteries, and I don’t believe who exactly will pay for these assets has. Even settled.

Aah, a brave new world of unneeded power storage! If anyone has further info I’d love to hear!

I believe the high-density battery layout shown in the former Moss Landing Power Plant Turbine Hall at 5:54 is similar to the plan Vistra Corporation has for a future *much larger* installation in Morro Bay, California. 80% of the batteries in the Moss Landing turbine hall are a total loss now. No wonder Morro Bay voters voted in November, 2024 to oppose this proposed installation. State leaders in Sacramento may attempt to override the local rejection.
